About San Nicolás Church

San Nicolás Church is one of Valencia's most important religious and artistic monuments, in the historic Ciutat Vella. Founded in the 13th century after the Christian conquest of the city, traditionally on the site of a former mosque, it combines a Valencian Gothic structure with lavish Baroque decoration.

It is best known for its Baroque frescoes, designed by Antonio Palomino and painted by Dionís Vidal in the late 17th century. Covering around 1,900 square metres, they depict scenes from the lives of Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Peter Martyr. A major restoration, completed in 2016, brought back their original colours and earned the church its nickname, the "Valencian Sistine Chapel".
